Reading the topic

The topic claims that real education multiplies questions rather than settling them, because learning reveals how much remains unknown. The examiner expects a contrast between rote education that produces answers for exams and liberal education that produces curiosity, humility and independent judgement, with links to science, democracy and India's school system.

ThesisEducation succeeds when it leaves a person more curious and more humble, because a mind that keeps questioning stays open to correction and to new discovery.

Dimensions to cover

  1. 1Philosophy: the wisest teachers in both Greek and Indian traditions defined wisdom as awareness of one's ignorance and the courage to ask
  2. 2Psychology: people with little knowledge often overrate their competence, while experts see more uncertainty
  3. 3School system: exam-centred rote learning trains students to supply answers, not to frame questions
  4. 4Policy: India's education policy now explicitly aims at critical thinking and inquiry-based learning over memorisation
  5. 5Democracy: citizens who ask questions of leaders, data and media are harder to manipulate
  6. 6Limits: endless questioning without commitment can become paralysis, so education must also build the capacity to act on provisional answers

Counter-view

  • Some argue that education exists to give reliable answers, and a doctor or engineer must know, not just wonder. The essay should accept that competence needs settled knowledge, while showing that even experts grow by questioning that knowledge at its edges

Open and close

  • Open: Open with a Class 5 child who asks her teacher why the sky is blue, gets told 'it is not in the syllabus', and stops asking questions for years
  • Close: Conclude that the best education leaves behind not a full mind but an awake one, able to act on what it knows while asking what it does not

Where marks usually go

  • Treating 'well-educated' as 'highly qualified' and writing about degrees and literacy rates
  • Glorifying doubt without limits and ignoring the need for decisions and expertise
  • Turning it into a GS-2 answer on NEP 2020 provisions without the philosophical core
