Reading the topic

The claim is that innovation, not just capital and labour, decides growth and welfare. The examiner wants a test of this through economic theory, India's record and the question of whose welfare innovation serves, including frugal and social innovation, institutions that support it, and its risks of inequality and job loss.

ThesisInnovation is the most durable driver of growth, but it raises welfare only when institutions spread its benefits and the state invests in research the market neglects.

Dimensions to cover

  1. 1Theory: growth models show most long-run growth comes from technological progress, not just more capital
  2. 2State role: public funding of basic research often underpins private breakthroughs, so innovation is not market-only
  3. 3Social welfare: frugal innovations in health and farming lift lives directly, beyond GDP gains
  4. 4India's gap: low research spending and weak industry-academia links limit India's innovation-led growth
  5. 5Inequality: innovation can concentrate gains among skilled workers and big firms unless diffusion is supported
  6. 6Institutions: patents, education and finance determine whether ideas become products

Counter-view

  • Some argue institutions, demographics or capital accumulation matter more, as East Asia's early growth showed. The essay should accept these as necessary but show innovation becomes decisive once economies near the frontier

Open and close

  • Open: Open with a craftsman in Jaipur fitting a rubber foot on a farmer who lost his leg, letting him walk back into his field the same week
  • Close: End by arguing that innovation becomes welfare when public research, inclusive diffusion and good institutions work together

Where marks usually go

  • Writing only about startups and unicorns, which narrows innovation to private tech
  • Ignoring welfare and writing a pure growth essay
  • Using unverified rankings or R&D figures without year and source
