Reading the topic

The line claims that the highest refinement lies in removing the unnecessary, not in adding complexity. An examiner looks for the insight that true simplicity is hard-won: it comes after mastering complexity, and appears in design, thought, law, governance and personal life.

ThesisSimplicity is not the absence of depth but its finest expression, and in public policy, science and personal life the simplest workable solution usually reflects the most sophisticated understanding.

Dimensions to cover

  1. 1Science: elegant theories explain more with fewer assumptions, which is why simplicity is a test of good reasoning
  2. 2Technology and design: products that hide complexity behind easy interfaces reach the widest population
  3. 3Governance: simple laws, forms and processes reduce corruption and help citizens claim their rights
  4. 4Personal life: fewer possessions and clearer priorities reduce stress and free time for what matters
  5. 5Ethics: a simple moral test can guide complex decisions better than long rulebooks

Counter-view

  • Some argue modern problems like climate change or financial regulation are genuinely complex and oversimplifying them is dangerous. The essay should distinguish simplicity, which clarifies after understanding, from simplism, which ignores reality

Open and close

  • Open: Open with a street vendor in a small town accepting payment by holding up a printed QR code, a few seconds of simplicity resting on years of engineering
  • Close: End by arguing that the mark of a mature mind, design or state is the ability to make the complex easy to use without making it false

Where marks usually go

  • Treating simplicity as poverty or austerity and writing only about simple living
  • Confusing simplicity with oversimplification and praising shortcuts
  • Confidently attributing the line to a famous figure, since its origin is disputed
