Reading the topic
The topic says the past is never left behind: it lives in memory, identity, values and institutions. The examiner wants an essay on how the past shapes consciousness for better and worse, and on the difference between learning from history and being imprisoned by it.
ThesisThe past is a permanent part of who we are, and the task is not to escape it but to remember it honestly so it informs our values without dictating our hatreds.
Dimensions to cover
- 1Individual: personal memories and upbringing shape character and choices throughout life
- 2Nation: shared memories of struggle, like the freedom movement, build national identity and constitutional values
- 3Trauma: unresolved memories of partition, riots or caste oppression can keep resentments alive across generations
- 4History and politics: competing narratives about the past are often used to mobilise present political conflicts
- 5Learning: honest acknowledgement of past wrongs helps societies avoid repeating them
Counter-view
- Some argue modern societies should look only forward and that dwelling on the past breeds conflict. The essay should reply that forgetting is impossible and dangerous, but remembering selectively is equally harmful
Open and close
- Open: Open with an elderly man in Amritsar who, decades after 1947, still keeps the key to his family's house in Lahore
- Close: Conclude that a society shows maturity not by forgetting its past but by deciding which lessons from it to carry forward
Where marks usually go
- Writing a history essay listing events without reflecting on consciousness and values
- Glorifying the past or condemning it entirely
- Ignoring the word 'permanent' and arguing the past can simply be discarded
