Reading the topic

The topic says that how others see us reveals their own lens, biases and experiences, while how we respond reveals our own character. The examiner expects an essay on perception, projection, self-awareness and emotional maturity, with applications in personal life, public service and society.

ThesisWe cannot control how others perceive us, but our response is a measure of our self-awareness, so maturity lies in responding from values rather than reacting to judgement.

Dimensions to cover

  1. 1Psychology: people often project their own fears and insecurities onto others, so criticism can say more about the critic
  2. 2Philosophy: Indian and Stoic thought both hold that truth has many sides and that we suffer from opinions about events, not events themselves
  3. 3Society: stereotypes about caste, gender or region reflect the perceiver's conditioning rather than the person perceived
  4. 4Public service: civil servants face criticism and praise alike, and their responses reveal integrity and emotional intelligence
  5. 5Digital age: online trolling shows perceptions shaped by anonymity and anger, where calm response is a test of self-awareness
  6. 6Limits: honest feedback also reflects reality, and dismissing every perception as projection blocks self-improvement

Counter-view

  • A counter is that others' perceptions often contain truths we cannot see ourselves, so treating them only as reflections of the perceiver is arrogant. The essay should integrate this by arguing that self-awareness means sifting feedback calmly, accepting what is valid and declining what is projection

Open and close

  • Open: Open with a young officer reading a viral post calling her arrogant after a demolition drive, and the choice she faces between replying in anger or explaining the order calmly
  • Close: Conclude that freedom lies in the space between others' perception and our reaction, and that self-awareness is the skill of using that space well

Where marks usually go

  • Misreading the topic as an essay on public image or reputation management
  • Arguing that others' views never matter, which rejects useful feedback and seems arrogant
  • Staying abstract and missing applications in public life and governance
