Reading the topic

The question asks whether common tests such as board exams and entrance tests truly measure what students know and how they progress. The examiner expects a distinction between ability and progress, and a weighing of tests' fairness and scale against their narrowness, coaching distortions and vulnerability to leaks.

ThesisStandardised tests are a fair way to compare students at scale but a poor measure of ability or growth, so they should be one input in a wider assessment system.

Dimensions to cover

  1. 1Fairness: a common paper gives a student from a small town the same test as one from an elite school, which is why tests are trusted
  2. 2Narrowness: timed objective tests reward recall and speed but miss creativity, oral reasoning and practical skill
  3. 3Distortion: when a test decides futures, teaching shrinks to test preparation and coaching replaces schooling
  4. 4Progress: one annual exam shows a snapshot, while continuous assessment tracks how a child improves over time
  5. 5Integrity: paper leaks and malpractice undermine trust in the measure itself
  6. 6System diagnosis: large sample surveys of learning help governments find gaps, a valid use of standard tests

Counter-view

  • Defenders argue that in a country of crores of students, any subjective system invites bias and corruption. The essay should accept this and argue for better-designed tests plus school-based assessment, not abolition

Open and close

  • Open: Open with two students who both scored 92 percent: one memorised model answers, the other built a working solar lamp for her village and could explain every step
  • Close: End by arguing that a good test measures understanding, and a good system never lets one test decide a child's worth

Where marks usually go

  • Turning the essay into a commentary on the NEET controversy alone
  • Treating ability and progress as the same thing
  • Rejecting all tests without offering a workable alternative for large-scale selection
