Reading the topic

The topic rejects the idea that happiness is a reward waiting at the end of achievements. It says happiness is found in how we live each day: our attitudes, relationships and engagement in meaningful work. The examiner expects the essay to contrast 'I will be happy when' thinking with happiness as a way of travelling, supported by psychology and philosophy.

ThesisHappiness is not a prize earned after reaching goals but a way of living, built from meaningful engagement, relationships and gratitude in the present.

Dimensions to cover

  1. 1Psychology: deep absorption in a challenging task, known as flow, produces lasting satisfaction independent of the result
  2. 2Relationships: long-term research finds close relationships predict happiness and health more than wealth or fame
  3. 3Education: teaching emotional well-being in schools treats happiness as a skill practised daily, not a future reward
  4. 4Economy: consumer culture sells happiness as the next purchase, keeping it always one step away
  5. 5Governance: well-being frameworks ask states to improve daily quality of life, not just long-run growth figures
  6. 6Literature: characters who postpone living until success often realise too late that they missed life itself

Counter-view

  • Some argue that real happiness does require achieving material security and goals, and the poor cannot simply choose happiness. The essay should agree that basic needs matter, while showing that beyond them happiness depends on how one lives rather than what one attains

Open and close

  • Open: Open with a topper who clears a competitive exam after years of postponing every joy, and on result day feels strangely empty
  • Close: Conclude that happiness is found by walking well, not by arriving, and that a good life is a happy road rather than a happy ending

Where marks usually go

  • Confusing happiness with pleasure and writing about entertainment or consumption
  • Repeating the quote's phrasing without explaining what 'happiness is the path' means in practice
  • Dismissing material needs entirely, which makes the essay seem detached from Indian realities
