Reading the topic

In botany, the thorns of plants like Bougainvillea and Citrus are modified axillary buds, so the image is literally true. Metaphorically, harshness in a person or group is often a softer potential bent by circumstance: neglect, violence or deprivation. The examiner expects the essay to ask what turns buds into thorns and whether that change can be prevented or reversed.

ThesisHostility in people and societies is usually potential that circumstance has hardened, so a humane society must both protect itself from thorns and remove the conditions that create them.

Dimensions to cover

  1. 1Biology: a thorn is a bud adapted to defend the plant in harsh conditions, suggesting that harshness is often a survival strategy, not innate nature
  2. 2Individual: children exposed to abuse or neglect can grow defensive and aggressive, which is why early childhood care matters
  3. 3Criminal justice: a rehabilitative system treats offenders, especially juveniles, as changed buds who can still flower
  4. 4Society: communities denied dignity, through caste exclusion or displacement, may turn grievance into anger and sometimes violence
  5. 5Governance: addressing insurgency through development and surrender-rehabilitation recognises the bud inside the thorn
  6. 6Ethics: thorns also protect, so some toughness, like a whistleblower's resilience, is a healthy adaptation rather than a fault

Counter-view

  • One could argue that some people choose cruelty freely and that blaming circumstance excuses wrongdoing. The essay should accept individual responsibility while showing that explaining a thorn is not excusing it; understanding causes simply makes prevention possible

Open and close

  • Open: Open with a gardener pruning a Bougainvillea hedge who tells a child that every thorn on it was once a bud that chose to become a weapon
  • Close: Conclude that a society is judged by how few buds it forces into thorns and how many thorns it helps to flower again

Where marks usually go

  • Reading the line only as 'every rose has thorns' and writing about pain within pleasure, which misses the idea of transformation
  • Becoming an apology for crime or terror by blaming only society and ignoring individual choice
  • Getting the botany wrong or ignoring it, when the literal fact is a strong anchor for the essay
